The son of Gerald Claude Nares, he was born in Bristol on the 29th Aug 1921. He was brought up in Brazil, where his father worked, and was sent back to the UK to go to Taunton School at the age of seven. He went back to Brazil to work for his father, but in 1940 volunteered to join up and was sent to serve in the East Africa Reconnaissance Squad.
After the war he married Jeanne Brewis in 1946 and went back to Brazil, but returned to the UK to become a director of his father-in-law's iron and steel broking business in Bristol. They had one son, Anthony, born in 1956.
